CALCUTTA, India, July 11 (Reuters) — India has decided to move about 2.5 million East Pakistani ‘refugees to central camps to relieve the tremendous pressure on her border states.
R. K. Khadilkar, the Minister of Labor, Employment and Rehabilitation, told reporters that 46 camps, each housing 50,000 refugees, would be provided in various areas. Some camps have already been built, he said.
Mr. Khadilkar said that by yesterday about 6,763,000 East Pakistanis had crossed into India since the Pakistani Army began to crush the East Pakistani autonomy movement in March. Of the total, 3,163,000 were women and 1,135,000 were under 18, he said.
Thirty of the new camps will be built near border areas. Other camps will be in Madhya Pradesh, a state in Central India, and in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.
