DACCA, Pakistan, Aug. 16— Government troops made house‐to‐house sweeps through Dacca over the weekend, apparently heading off threatened terrorism by the Bengali separatists.
According to rebel posters and handbills, guerrilla attacks were planned to coincide with observances of Pakistan's National Day Saturday and yesterday. Shooting was heard in several parts of the city.
Among those picked up by the military police was A.T.M. Abdul Mateen, a former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, who was released after questioning. He is said to be a supporter of the Government.
Meanwhile, institutions of higher education, which reopened Aug. 2 for the first time since March, remained virtually deserted. According to the latest unofficial tally, at Dacca University, which normally has about 6,000 students, there were 32; at Chittagong, 30 of 2,000 and at Mymensingh Agricultural University 6 of 1,200.
