KARACHI, Pakistan, Sept. —A number of persons held in connection with the recent disturbances in East Pakistan were released yesterday from various detention camps and jails in Dacca, Comilla, Jessore, Chittagong, Natore and Rangpur in East Pakistan, the official press agency reported today.
The agency said the release followed a general amnesty granted by President Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan. It said the persons included members of the armed forces, the police, the paramilitary East Pakistan Rifles, volunteer forces, government servants and other citizens.
The agency did not give the number of the released persons.
It said the persons released today “regretted their offenses and pledged to work for the integrity and prosperity of Pakistan.”
