WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (Reuters)—The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted a proposal today to suspend economic and military aid to Pakistan, according to committee members.
The committee also approved a measure that would allow the President to suspend American assistance to nations that refuse to cooperate fully in ending international drug traffic, they said.
The two measures were similar to amendments voted by the House when it approved the $3.4‐billion foreign‐aid authorization bill in August.
Before accepting the House language, the committee narrowly defeated by 7 to 6 a tougher proposal to cut off aid to Pakistan. The amendment would have required the agreement of Congress and the return home of a majority of East Pakistani refugees in India before aid could be restored.
