Andrei Vozesensky, the Russian poet, recited four poems that ranged in mood from angry despair to playful satire last night at an evening of verse and song held to raise relief money for the Bengalis in East Pakistan.
Without referring specifically to the conflict In Pakistan, Mr. Vozesensky told his audience of 600 in St. George's Church, at 207 East 16th Street, that “we Russian know what hunger is, what war is” and that his poems were “against war in general, against hunger in general.” Mr. Voznesensky is on a tour of American cities.
The 38‐year old poet recited his verse in Russian, gesturing dramatically as he modulated his voice. Translations of all but one of the poems were read equally vigorously by Allen Ginsberg, the American poet, who is an old friend of Mr. Voznesensky.
The event raised $1,000.
