Sheik Mujibur Rahman, the Bengali leader, was put on trial last August by the West Pakistan‐based Government of President Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan for “waging war against Pakistan.” Sheik Mujib had won commanding majority in National Assembly elections last year but the elections were set aside and the sheik was arrested when a threat of secession developed in the largely Bengali province of East Pakistan.
Later the Government announced that a defense attorney had been appointed for the sheik, but for weeks there was no word of how the trial was progressing or even officially where it was being held. Then last week, an East Pakistani secessionist leader visiting New York said the rebel regime had learned that the sheik had been seen four weeks ago in Lyallpur, West Pakistan, where he was on trial. At that time he was “listless and feeble.” Since then; however, there has been no more word.
