Pakistan Reports on Action in Kashmir
RAWALPINDI, Pakistan, Dec. 5—Pakistani troops were re ported today to be advancing along Abe: cease‐fire line in Kashmir, the Himalayan state whose status has been the subject of two previous Indian Pakistani wars.
The Pakistan radio reported fighting all along the line.
An official spokesman said that 61 Indian planes had been destroyed. He said that the Indians were concentrating air attacks on the Karachi area, where most of the Indian planes had been shot down.
The spokesman also said that Pakistani planes had attacked Indian air bases at Pathankot, Agra, Amritsar and Srinagar and had given close support to ground troops, hitting Indian tanks, gun positions and troop concentrations.
The spokesman said that the Pakistan Air Force had not lost any aircraft other than two Sabre jets yesterday and that none or its planes had been destroyed on the ground.
A Pakistan Air Force spokes man said that seven Indian Canberra bombers and six Hunter aircraft had been destroyed in attacks on Pakistani territory. One pilot was captured, he said.
Asked whether surface‐to‐air missiles had been fired on Pakistani aircraft from Indian bases, the spokesman said that pilots had reported seeing missiles fired but that none of them had hit planes.
On the ground, the Pakistan radio said, 300 Indians were killed or wounded in Kashmir State and Jammu, most of them in the Tithwal and Uri sectors.
The radio also said that Pakistani troops had advanced in the Poonch area and had knocked out 11 Indian tanks in the Sulemanki region.
It said Pakistani troops had repulsed an Indian attack on Akhaura railroad station in the eastern region of East Pakistan, an important road and rail junction on the way to the East Pakistani capital of Dacca.
In the Kashmir fighting, an official spokesman said, Pakistani troops crossed the cease fire line and captured the town of Desa in the Chamb sector of the Indian‐controlled state.
He said Pakistani troops were also making a determined assault on Indian territory in the area around Lahore.
In East Pakistan, fighting was reported in the Sylhet area. The spokesman said India suffered heavy casualties there and that an armor‐supported Indian assault in the Hilli region had been repulsed.
