KARACHI, Pakistan, Jan. 30 —Two young Kashmiris, said to belong to the National Liberation Front, an organization in Indian‐held Kashmir, today hijacked an Indian Airlines plane and forced its pilot to land at the Lahore airport.
The plane, with 28 passengers and a crew of four, was flying from Srinagar to Jammu in Indian Kashmir at the time. It was the first hijacking of an Indian plane.
The National Liberation Front said in Karachi that the hijackers were members.
A Foreign Office spokesman said in Islamabad that the passengers and crew were safe. He said that the hijackers had re fused to give up the plane and that Pakistani authorities had been trying to persuade them to leave it. As soon as they leave, he said, the aircraft and passengers would be free to leave Lahore.
The pilot, Capt. G. S. Oberoi, said on Pakistani television that one hijacker had wielded a pistol and that the other had held a hand grenade.
