DACCA, Bangladesh, Aug. 30 (Reuters) — President Khondakar Mushtaque Ahmed today banned the Awami League, which was the country's only political party and which had been led by Sheik Mujibur Rahman, who was overthrown and killed on Aug. 15.
President Mushtaque Ahmed who took over as President from Sheikh Mujib after the coup, warned in a decree that violators of the ban would be liable to seven years' imprisonment and the confiscation of their property.
The Awami League became, the only political party last January when Sheik Mujib changed, the country's parliamentary government to that of one‐party presidential rule.
