(26 Apr 1971) RR7117A PAKISTAN: BANGLA DESH SECEDES Bengali leader Sheikh Mujib has been demading greater autonomy for his country. When he failed to win concessions from President Yahya Khan during the March 1971 negotiations, he declared UDI and set up the state of Bangla Desh. When President Yahya sent in his army an estimated 35,000 Bengalis were killed and 250,000 refugees fled to India. Sheikh Mujib is under arrest. This report shows scenes of brutality and destruction by the Pakistan Army and floods of refugees. It also examines the view that the civil war is not over, but entering a new guerrilla phase.
