Calm now prevails in the main cities and countryside of East Pakistan. according to the Pakistan High Commission in London.
An official claimed last night that no incidents had been reported in Dacca or the other cities, Reports that Chittagong was in the hands of the Awami League were completely baseless, he said.
Relaxation of the curfew yesterday was cited as evidence of calmer conditions in Dacca. The curfew was said to have been imposed for midday, but was put back to 5 p.m. "Obviously this is a sign of an improved situation."
There are some 800 British subjects in East Pakistan. About a quarter of them live in Dacca. Some 150 others left earlier this month.
The Government has discussed the position of British subjects who may be in danger in East Pakistan with the Pakistan authorities.
Until more information is available on the general situation, it is unlikely that any move to evacuate them will be made.
