Shillong, India, May 26.—At least 120 Pakistan troops have been killed by Indian border security forces in clashes during the past 48 hours, according to a Press Trust of India report tonight.
The Pakistanis had intruded from East Pakistan into the Indian state of Assam and the newly formed territory of Meghalaya, the agency said. Eleven men of the border security forces were among 30 Indians who died when the Pakistan Army opened fire with machine-guns and mortars, and another 43 Indians were wounded.
Pakistan forces were massing in strength at several places along the 620-mile northern border of East Pakistan, P.T.I. said. The build-up was said to be particularly heavy in the SyIhet and Jaikaganj sectors.
Authoritative reports reaching Shillong and quoted by P.T.I. said that Pakistan troops were tonight shelling the East Pakistan Tamabil border checkpost area, in the Sylhet district, which was in the hands of separatist Bangla Desh forces.
There have been repeated attempts since Monday by the Pakistan Army to intrude into Indian territory at Sutarkandi, Jorapatta, Latu, Dalu, Tillapara, Chaipani and Dawki, the agency said. One officer and a private of the border security force had been kidnapped from the Dalu area yesterday, and four civilians from Jorapatta village.
Early today the Pakistanis mortared and machine-gunned the Meghalaya border outpost of Dawki, killing one person and wounding seven, the agency reported.
In Delhi, Mrs. Gandhi, the Indian Prime Minister, said today that developments in East Pakistan threatened not only peace and security in India but in the whole of south-east Asia.
Speaking in a debate in the Lower House of Parliament, she appealed to the great powers to intervene and reestablish peaceful conditions in the sub-continent. - Reuter.
