Background: A group of Pakistani demonstrators today shouted "No Genocide" and "Independence Now" and waved banners outside Congress.

The group of about 60 men, women and children, primarily Bengalis from East Pakistan, staged the demonstration on the steps of the Capitol Building in hopes of gaining support for U.S. recognition of an independent Government in East Pakistan.

They said they wanted the U.S. to take immediate steps to recognize a new Government of "Bangladesh" (Bengali nation) and stop what they called Genocide by West Pakistani Army and Air Force Units.

Several members of the group fanned out to see members of Congress and their aides, while others stood on the Capitol steps carrying hand-lettered placards "Genocide has to be stopped" and "Our women and children are being machine gunned, help us."
