Almost £500,000 has already been raised in Britain for the India-Pakistan Relief Fund since it was launched on Tuesday.
The Disasters Emergency Committee, representing five British charities, announced last night that it had received approximately £380,000. This is probably more than was sent in the first three days of the Pakistan cyclone appeal in November.
The individual charities, Oxfam, War on Want, the Save the Children Fund, Christian Aid and the Red Cross, have been receiving donations for the fund since Tuesday—the Save the Children Fund have about £40,000 to hand over.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have contributed to the fund and in the 24 hours up to midday yesterday over 28,000 letters were received at the Disasters Emergency Committee headquarters in London.
