Islamabad, June 13.—Three British MPs yesterday met President Yahya Khan of Pakistan to discuss relief measures and the rehabilitation of Bengali refugees who have fled to India.
The MPs, Mrs Jill Knight, Conservative, Edgbaston. Mr James Kilfedder, Conservative, Down, North, and Mr James Tinn, Labour, Cleveland, are to study the situation in East Pakistan and report to the British Government on the aid required.
When they arrived yesterday, they welcomed President Yahya's offer to take back East Pakistan refugees from India.
Mr Kilfedder told reporters at the airport: “We feel the President's offer was very wise, commendable and humanitarian and hope that people who have fled will come back to their homes”.
Mr Kilfedder said they had come to see things for themselves and would spend most of their time in East Pakistan. They would examine what could be done to induce refugees to return.
Mrs Knight who said she would see camps set up to receive refugees from across the border, said: “We want to test the accuracy of some of the stories we read in Britain about the East Pakistan situation."
It had been reported that Pakistan did not want any aid for the rehabilitation of refugees but this was something she could not believe.
Mr Tinn said another delegation. would later visit both India and Pakistan.
Karachi. June 13.—The MPs later flew to Peshawar on a sightseeing trip.
Mrs Knight was quoted by the official Associated Press of Pakistan as saying that the delegation’s meeting with President Yahya was wonderful and praising the straightforward way he spoke to them.—Reuter.
