East Pakistan
From Dr A. K. M. M. Haque
Sir. The letter (July 7) written jointly by Dr S. Sajjad Husain and D.r M. Mohar Ali prompts two main questions: Are these two gentlemen here as emissaries of Yahya Khan to placate a large number of educated Bengalis whose families have suffered, or, are they here to reassure the British public confused by the utterings of the two delegations of MPs ?
Those who have been connected with the Dacca University over the past 10 or 15 years will find it difficult to be comforted or reassured by the two venerable doctors.
Secondly, if Drs Husain and Ali are correct in that life is really safe in East Pakistan, how am I to reconcile with the fact that half of my family has fled (those who are mobile) to India and the others, are living in abject fear because the military has either looted their property or burnt down their homes or both?
I need hardly mention that we are of Muslim faith and that these members of my family do not belong to the Awami League. The news of the Bengali families I know here are very much the same.
Yours faithfully.
