Mr Arnold Smith, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, may fly to India and Pakistan as a mediator.
A spokesman for the Secretariat in London said last night that Mr Smith had been in close touch with the situation in the sub-continent since the outbreak of the civil war in East Pakistan.
It is understood that in the past few weeks initiatives from Commonwealth countries for action to be taken to prevent the worsening relations between India and Pakistan have been intensified
