George Harrison and Ringo Starr, two of the Beatles group, made their first concert appearance in four years at Madison Square Garden, New York, this afternoon on behalf of the East Pakistan refugees.
It was also the first time that either George or Ringo had appeared at a major concert without Paul McCartney and John Lennon and the capacity crowd of 18,000, with a foot-stamping 10-minute ovation, showed they were grateful for a half measure.
Mr Starr, sporting surely the blackest beard in the world, took a back seat, literally, as one of the drummers, except when he accompanied Bob Dylan on the tambourine. He sang only one song, “Open Up Your Heart” though the audience clamoured for more.
The main role was reserved for Mr Harrison, dressed in a white suit and an open-necked orange shirt and with a wispy beard, who sang songs he had written himself.
The proceeds from both concerts, the second was later this evening, totalled £100,000 and will go to Unicef and then on to the refugees. Four times this amount is expected from sales of the record.
