Many members of the Awami League, now fugitives from East Bengal, feel that Mrs Gandhi has shifted her position on Bangla Desh under Soviet pressure.
Should the Indian Prime Minister visit Britain later this year, they say, she will have no cause to lecture Mr Heath on the moral issues.
They point out that the joint declaration issued by Britain and India in June agreed that the crisis could be resolved only by a political solution “acceptable to the people of East Pakistan”.
On the other hand, the latest Indo-Soviet communiqué called for a political solution which would “answer the interests of the entire people of Pakistan”.
The Awami League's fears are understandable. Under the British declaration, it would not be acceptable for President Yahya Khan to set up a puppet government in East Bengal, because the elected representatives of the people of East Pakistan would never agree to such a solution.
