Delhi, Aug 30—About 600,000 people have been affected by fresh floods in the southern part of West Bengal in the past three days, according to government officials in Calcutta
As the situation in the northern part of the state began to improve, incessant rain caused rivers to burst their banks in the Midnapore district south of Calcutta.
In Uttar Pradesh the floods that have swept across the state in the past few weeks have claimed 133 lives and affected 50 out of 544 districts. Mr Udit Narain Sharma the Revenue Minister, told the Legislative Assembly in Lucknow today.
He said the damage to houses and crops from what he called the state's worst flood on record amounted to 710m rupees (about £40m). More than 400m rupees was needed for relief work.
The death toll in the recent floods, caused by heavy monsoon rains, which have devastated large areas of northern and eastern India is not yet known. It is feared that about a thousand may have died—Reuter
Dacca. Aug 30— Monsoon floods have damaged crops worth about 500m rupees (about £57m) in East Pakistan, according to preliminary estimates in Dacca.
