Petrapole, Sept 5. — Four members of the British “Operation Omega” peace team today walked across the border into East Pakistan here but, apparently, were stopped immediately by Pakistan troops.
Two men and two girls crossed from the Indian border post, 45 miles North-East of Calcutta, carrying on their backs token relief supplies for the people of East Bengal.
About 300 yards inside East Pakistan, where the Calcutta-Jessore road begins to bend out of sight, they were seen arguing with a Pakistan Army unit. About 90 minutes after they crossed, they were led away by the soldiers.
The organization's first attempt to cross the border with supplies was foiled on August 17 when its team was stopped by the Pakistan Army soon after crossing the border here. They were sent back to India after about 26 hours with the warning that, if they returned, they would be arrested and tried under Pakistan law.
In spite of this warning, the organization announced on Friday that it would try to reenter Pakistan at two places to try to deliver supplies to hungry people. – Reuter
