On the final day of her visit to Austria Mrs Indira Gandhi, the Indian Prime Minister, told journalists that she had not come to Austria to get or to give anything, but simply to renew acquaintances.
“Europe is changing so fast”, she said, “and it is important to keep abreast with changes.” This was also her purpose in visiting London.
Replying to questions. Mrs Gandhi said that India was not agreeable to the United Nations sending observers to supervise the withdrawal of Indian and Pakistan troops from the border area.
“Why”, she demanded angrily, “was the United Nations not interested when there were only Pakistan forces deployed along the frontier, and only became concerned when Indian troops were involved.”
At one point during the press conference Mrs Gandhi showed strong emotion in referring to East Pakistan, exclaiming: “A major crime has been committed. More than a million have died.”
She made it quite clear, however, that the refugees from East Pakistan must return home.
