Mrs Gandhi, the Indian Prime Minister, was applauded by demonstrators chanting “Aid for India” in Oxford yesterday after she received an honorary degree from the university. A group of about 50 students staged the peaceful demonstration in sympathy with India's efforts to feed East Pakistan refugees as Mrs Gandhi left the Sheldonian theatre.
Several carried placards saying: “Thank, you, India, for doing the world’s job.” The Prime Minister stopped to talk with demonstrators, who explained that they were urging the British Government to give more money to India’s refugee programme. Police cleared a path to her waiting car as a crowd of about 500 jostled lo get a closer view.
Mrs Gandhi, who was in Oxford for the first time since 1938, received the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law from Mr Harold Macmillan, the Chancellor.
