Peking, Dec. 21. Mr. Bhutto’s accession to power was expected to strengthen Chinese political support for Pakistan. He is regarded here as having been the main architect of Sino-Pakistan friendship when he was Foreign Minister. Further, as leader of the People’s Party he seems to be in a better position than outgoing President Yahya Khan to give a progressive orientation to Pakistan’s internal policies.
Peking’s full support in the solving of the East Pakistan problem was confirmed five days ago by Mr. Chow En-lai, the Prime Minister. All Mr. Bhutto’s statements since he left New York have contained references to the “unity of Pakistan” and his rejection of the principle of partition coincides with that of China on the East Pakistan issue. In his December 16 statement Mr. Chou said Pakistan did not stand alone in its struggle for national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and promised China’s firm support.
