DACCA, Pakistan, March 16 — President Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan opened discussions here today with Sheik Mujibur Rahman, the political leader of rebellious East Pakistan.
After conferring for two and a half hours at the President's house, the two men agreed to meet again tomorrow. Neither Sheik Mujib nor the President would give any indication whether there had been any progress toward resolving the political crisis that has threatened to split the two‐section country.
The President arrived here last night from his capital in West Pakistan, which is separated from the East by 1,000 miles of Indian territory. All roads around the Presidential mansion have been barricaded since student demonstrators marched by last night shouting “Down with Yahyal” “Enemy troops, go home!” and “Independent Bangla Desh!”
Bangle Desh, which is the Bengali term for “Bengali Homeland,” is the name now widely used here for East Pakistan.
Troops are on guard both inside and outside the compound.
There was nothing to indicate today that Sheik Mujib had budged from his position that martial law must be ended and power turned over to the elected representatives of the people before his Awami League would consider attending the meeting of the National Assembly the President has now called for March 25.
