Civil War in Pakistan
To the Editor: I am sure that in the present civil war in East Pakistan the sympathies of all freedomāloving peoples of the world lie with the Bengalis in that region.
It is a strange paradox that all the war weapons supplied to Pakistan by the United States for the stipulated use against possible Communist aggression have only resulted in their profound misuse: in the 1965 war with India and now against its own defenseless people in the eastern section where thousands have been reportedly massacred, with the help of American jets, tanks and artillery.
The fact that in the first free elections held since the country's formation 23 years ago the Awami League party of East Pakistan won an absolute majority in the ruling body only adds insult to injury. I sincerely hope that the United States will learn the lesson that good intentions alone are not enough to produce good results and will in the future stop contributing in any form toward such inhuman acts of violence.
