KARACHI, Pakistan, May 5—A spokesman said today that the Government regretted the inconvenience caused newsmen by censorship but he sharply criticized foreign reporting of events in East Pakistan. He said censorship was necessary to preserve internal security.
Maj. Gen. Mohammad Akbar Khan, director of the Military Intelligence Service, said he felt that many articles by foreign newsmen had distorted facts and “maligned our wonderful army tradition.”
On March 26, as heavy fighting developed between East Pakistani secessionists and the national army, foreign newsmen were expelled to West Pakistan and their notes and film were seized.
Newsmen have since entered East Pakistan by crossing the Indian frontier. Six will fly in with Government permission tomorrow.
