KARACHI, Pakistan, March 29--The port of Chittagong is the center of the stiffest resistance to the Pakistani armed forces moving to suppress the rebellion in East Pakistan according to communiques from the martial law authorities for the East.
A report yesterday from these authorities said "the situation in Chittagong continues to improve and is well under control." But today's statement cited Chittagong as a trouble spot where "armed miscreants" were still active but effectively checked. Residents were urged to return to their homes and resume normal activities.
The reports said conditions in Dacca were returning to normal. Conditions in the countryside were similarly described.
Chittagong, East Pakistan's main port has for years been the center of a strong leftist labor movement and of hard-core followers of both the Awami League that has led the East Pakistan secession and the National Awami party of aged Maulana Bhashani, one of the most leftist political figures in East Pakistan.
Today's reports said banks had reopened in Dacca. Government servants who had been on strike were reported returning to work and Dacca's two English-language newspapers had resumed publication.
